Providing Free Tutoring
The Education Project is a volunteer-run program run under Humanity First USA working to bridge the socioeconomic gap in education by providing one-on-one tutoring -- FREE of cost -- to K-12 students needing personalized instruction across the country. While any parent can sign their child up for our tutoring, we also have weekly synchronous online tutoring for specific under-resourced schools and communities, including Keyser Elementary School, Pickle Elementary School, the Humanity First Duluth Food Pantry, and Broadleaf Primary and Infant School.

Once a student is matched, the parents will be notified and you will work with your tutor to schedule the first meeting. On the first meeting, the parent and tutor will sign a consent form and tutoring will begin with an IXL diagnostic test to gauge student Math & ELA levels. Then, a personalized learning plan will be created by IXL that the tutors will follow for two hours of instruction every week! Both parents and tutors must be able to commit to attending sessions two hours per week for a minimum two months.

Our mission is to support students’ academic success and facilitate pathways for college and career readiness through personalized tutoring and mentorship.

By tapping into the power of tutors, building strong partnerships with schools, and embracing IXL learning technology, we’re creating an engaging and supportive learning experience for students who need it the most.
Together, let’s unlock your full potential and pave the way to a brighter future!

After your form submission, you will also be requested to submit a reference and an asynchronous interview.
After your application is processed, we’ll set up a virtual orientation to get you up to speed with the logistical steps and best practices for tutoring. Once you are matched, you will receive an email of the student & parent information as well as the next steps.

Then, you will be required to help your student with tutoring regularly 1-2 hours per week for a minimum of two months.

The total processing time should take around 2 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this free?
Yes, there is no charge to receive tutoring. This service is free now and will remain free in the future.

How long will it take to get assigned a tutor?
Due to the high demand during this time, it takes about a week to assign a tutor. We will reach out to the email you provided. We ask that you respond as soon as you can when the tutor reaches out. If there is no response for 3 days, we will reassign the tutor to another student and you will have to reapply.

What are the age groups of students that you tutor?
We tutor students who are currently enrolled from kindergarten to 12th grade.

How do you ensure the safety of your students?
Our number one commitment is towards the safety and privacy of our students. All of our tutors go through a 2-step verification process. The first step is to verify their background and experience. We review the transcripts for all tutors and employment details for professionals. The second step is the onboarding process, where interview tutors about their background and confirm their experiences.
All data entered into our online form gets stored in a secure online database. We do not ask for the student's physical address or anything hinting at their location. The student's application is only shared with their assigned tutor.

I'm currently in 12th grade and I'm going to college next year. Can I tutor?
Yes, you can tutor. Just provide us with proof of your acceptance into a post-high school program.

When was The Education Project started?
This was started on March 23, 2020.
